Building paths for youth entrepreneurship

Unemployment disproportionately affects youth. As a result, many young people turn to self-employment.

Raleigh International is a UK-based sustainable development charity working to create strong, sustainable youth enterprises in rural communities around the world, as part of the UK government-funded International Citizen Service programme.

The programme is led by Voluntary Service Overseas in partnership with development organisations. It uses peer mentoring to bring together young people from the UK and developing countries each year to develop and implement business ideas.

Established in 1962, INPRHU (Institute of Human Promotion) is Nicaragua’s oldest non-governmental organisation. It promotes human development in marginalised communities, representing groups of people with the greatest needs.

Today INPRHU works with nearly 200 communities in the Madriz region to support environmental and infrastructure projects.

Although one of the poorest departments, Madriz, the coffee market has increased exports and prices to become the major crop, poor conditions in the drought-ridden department have symied efforts to improve growth.

Nicaragua...

has a great and varied biosphere due to being situated in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. This is however, increasingly under threat as deforestation, water crisis and rising temperatures globally.

Only 63% of the rural population of Nicaragua has access to clean drinking water and only 34% has access to improved sanitation.

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

Located in the middle of the Americas, Nicaragua hosts great biodiversity. The weather & light altitudinal variations, allows the country to harbor 248 species of amphibians and reptiles, 183 species of mammals, 705 bird species, 640 fish species, and about 5,796 species of plant

The Bosawás Biosphere Reserve north of Jinotega near the northern border to Hondruas is approx. 20,000 km² in size, and comprises about 15% of the nation's total land area — making it the second largest rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, after the Amazon in Brazil.

We lived with a network of families in a community nestled in the foothills of the mountains that mark the Honduran border (Madriz region). We worked there and in another community situated by the Pan-American Highway that connects Southern, Central and Northern America together.

The local school provided education for the community up to first school level, after which children had to travel to Somoto or Estelí.
